Can a Real Memory be one from a Dream?

We write this post as a means to get a question answered if it is possible to do so. Lamo has been talking to Harlin about a specific experience that has happened to him twice now in his life. It has been making him feel like he is, “Losing his marbles“, as the saying tells us and in talking it through we cannot find a sane answer.

It is in regard to memories that seem to be very distinct, yet appear not to be real. These false memories come to him every now again and have done for many years. They are not just single moments but recur periodically.

In his mind there is what seems like a memory of a book he read many years ago. The weird thing is it feels to him more like a memory of a dream than of

dream1.jpg
Which Is Real?

something real. He feels as though he read the book in a dream. Now it is the dream about reading the book he is remembering rather than it being a real incident in his waking life. If it happened about one literary volume would be odd enough but there have been two very separate memories of fictional works!

With each of the two books he can remember the basic premise and the wisp of the story line. It is always the same though; in remembering it nothing new is added. With normal memories there are usually associated ones formed adding to the original but not in these instances for Lamo.

It being a dream rather than real is backed up by the fact that in both cases he, and Harlin, along with a couple of very close friends, cannot find any reference to either book’s synopsis anywhere! This does seem to imply Lamo did dream about reading these books rather than in real life.

Here we hit the crux of the problem. The question if this is even possible as popular science tells us that one thing us humans cannot do in dreams is read! We will share the following scientific reasoning behind this;

When we dream, the part of the brain responsible for logic and intellect shuts down, allowing us to accept crazy dream stuff as reality while at the same time inhibiting our ability to interpret letters and numbers.

If this is true, science often is being based on logic and fact, this adds to poor Lamo’s confusion over just what is real against that which is not. If he had read the books in real life then his recollection of the synopsis, although vague, should lead to finding the books. Lets face it the Internet is rarely lacking in allowing us to find such things with reasonable search criteria. Why is it neither of these books can be found?

Much like a coin with its heads and tails there is a contradiction to this nice scientific explanation from the field of dream analysis. Whilst they talk little about the reading of the books, they do describe the genre types. Lamo’s were both fiction books, here we pull an extract from the common analysis;

Fiction Book: A fiction book in your dream suggests that you are looking for ways to be entertained or that you feel the need to escape from reality.

As this question we ask of you is about memories, this is what they say about dreaming of such;

To dream of a memory would mean there is a message for you, something that needs to resolved about that memory that was recalled in a dream.

What we need to be resolved at Harlam is whether science trumps dream analysis or the other way round in this weird case.

Hence the question to you posed in this post, “Can a real memory be one from a dream?” We are of the thinking if this is the case then therein lies the answer to Lamo’s current dilemma. shutterstock_124521184 He is now remembering a specific part of a dream, a memory, which is about the reading of book but within the dreams past. If this is occurring it circumvents the scientific limitation about reading in dreams because he didn’t. What he did do was dream a memory of the reading event which now in his waking state is what he remembers.

Why we are asking this question is to understand whether it was his subconscious mind giving him a creative idea for a book or if he actually really read it? What concerns Harlam is this; if he does start to use this as a basis to write a book only to find it is a real one, he has wasted precious writing time.

You may ask us to share the synopsis of these two books to see if you could find them. We thought about this but do not want to share the synopsis with everyone in case it was created within his own mind. What writer would give a good story line away for some one else to potentially use to their own advantage? In not sharing we know it makes it harder to find out if it was a true book or not, in essence a  “Catch 22”. (Which we do know is a real book!)

Please leave your guidance, answer or any similar experience in the comments below, we would really love to heard from you on this.

You Can Talk to the Dead!

What a rather psychic sounding title for a blog post, rest assured there is nothing weird with where we are going with this. There are all manner of different ways people will tell you will allow conversations with the dead.

One that has gained a popular revival through its more frequent appearances as a character is in films. You know the format, couple of people having a

220px-english_ouija_board
Is There Anyone There?

laugh unwittingly released a demonic presence hell bent on turning everyone into a Kentucky Fried Chicken dinner. But in all seriousness, using one of these would be such a slow conversation as it is done a letter a time. It would take a week just to find out who you were talking to!

There is of course the seance, (Transfiguration as it is also known.), does not have to be a room full of people, as is the normal image. could be just you and the medium. They go into a trance supposedly the one you want to communicate with then uses their body as a vessel. These though always seem short lived, conversation is never very interesting, it is not a relaxed way to talk with someone, even if they are dead.

We here at Harlam do rather like the rather odd, Psychic Telephone, not the modern ones here you call a premium rate number to speak to some unknown medium. This one is, or rather was, a head set which was attached to an inflated balloon. The idea here is the spirit you want to talk to somehow vibrates this against a microphone that you can then hear.

God forbid neither are we talking about some ritual involving sacrifice with weird objects, pentagrams, candles laid out in patterns along with odd chanting. You might accidentally summon someone you really don’t want to be talking to! No, we genuinely believe  there is a more rational idea in which people can converse with lost loved ones.

Although the main idea is about talking to people we 16662961343_4692662c96_k.jpg have known, who have now passed on, there is an initial thought we want to talk though with you which lays the basis for it.

Like so many others Lamo experienced one of the most profound times in his life when his mother died. When she had been alive acted as his mentor, confidant as well as very often psychiatrist but in whatever guise, having a huge influence on him.

There are many quotes about why people are still with us even though they are dead;

As long as we remember a person, they are not really gone. Their thoughts, their feelings, their memories, they become a part of us.” – Justin Cronin

Or even from Lamo’s favorite late great author;

Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?” – Terry Pratchett (Going Postal)

Both of these are very relevant to our Harlam thought we want to share with you here. Let us consider why is a memory of a person that is no longer here any less real than the person themselves? After all it is created in the very same mind that perceives both versions of them. Whilst one is generated by their physical presence through the senses the second is created by their memories. As they are formed in the same mind are they not exactly the same in our reality?

Both perceptions make the person real to us, regardless of how they are generated. It must follow to reason if the memory makes them real then they still exist even after the physical death. They do not die until no memory of them exists anywhere. This is why we believe while they remain in our memory they are as real as the person sat next to you on the bus.

With this concept in mind we move to how we here at Harlam believe it is possible to talk to the dead. After his mum died Lamo heard one of the most profound thoughts ever in his life which became something he believes in today. Talking to a friend shortly after her untimely death the conversation went like this;

“I wish my mum was here so I could talk to her about this”
“Why can’t you talk to her?”
“Well she’s dead.”
“But you know what she would say if she were alive don’t you, so you can still talk to her.

Lamo’s friend was actually right. Even though that person is not physically here is of no consequence. Why? They exist in the form of our memories of them and we can talk to them just as easily as our own self. The important thing is because, like Lamo, dead you spent so much time talking about all manner of things in the past with them you sub consciously know what they would say as if they were sat with you now. Your not making the conversation up as might be with an imaginary character, it is genuinely two way.

We should point out though that whilst you can hold this post death chin wag with anyone there is a formula to bear in mind. “Accuracy Of Conversation = Closeness of relationship + Number Of Conversations.” It should go without saying the better you know the person, a parent, sibling or a best friend the more your talk with them will be true to the person they were when alive. If however it was a distant Aunt that you only saw wheeled out at other funerals and weddings, then your not really going to know what they might have said.

Remember no one is gone whist we carry their memory which makes them as real as they ever were. All the time they exist then of course we can still talk with them for that conversation is real to!

The Whisper of Death.

Harlin recently shared with Lamo a thought she had flash into her mind whilst pottering around in her kitchen. She posed the following question based on this;

Have you ever heard the sound of a dying candle or from a Diya. The sound that comes from the burnt out wick?

This weird moment had come upon her whilst alone in an almost silent kitchen. Harlin heard a faint crackle which startled her as their was no one else there that she was aware of. Upon investigating nervously burning-candle-fading-flame-smoke-black-background-burning-candle-fading-flame-smoke-black-background-104243846 she saw a dying Diya, (a small cup-shaped oil lamp made of baked clay), with a final wisp of smoke rising from it. Seeing this it was then the feeling she had in that moment which was truly surprising. Pity, is how she described it, for it sounded almost like this Diya was saying goodbye to her with its last dying breath. Wanting to be heard knowing it wouldn’t die alone.

We know non living things have no sentiments but still there is a beauty in any death as remarkable as its birth. Being able to hear that in the softest of sounds brings that final farewell to an emotional feeling of understanding. Perhaps even adding to our insight in to the World around us. Such was the profound thought that Harlin had after this emotionally charged incident shared with this Diya which until now was just a simple inanimate object.

It got us to thinking of those other dying whispers of such non living beings we as humans either don’t hear or perhaps choose not to. Lets be very clear here before we move on to our other candidates in this idea regarding what is not a valid entry. Trees, Plants, Animals, those things that are considered alive are not. The thought that has been raised is bound to those objects that are simply things, objects, made by humans in most cases. (Certainly in all the ones we could think of they are!)

By way of non inclusive examples, here are two which did cross our minds as we pondered together at Harlam but were ruled out for they are actual living beings.

A tree falling to its final death bed on the forest floor.

Perhaps a solitary Leaf that falls from an Autumn tree as it is pushed to its final resting place by the whispering wind.

With that now explained, allow us to proceed in describing our poor dying entities who give out that, “Whisper of Death“, when their time has come to an end.

First, much like the Diya is that tiny, “Tink” sound, (best word we could think of to describe it), made by its modern day counterpart the filament light bulb. (Not the modern energy saving versions.) Both giving their individual whispering sound signifying the death of the light they once shone when alive.

Next the sound made as the final part of a sinking boat or ship, slips from above to just beneath water_droplet the watery surface. Its the sound of the whisper made by the water as it reforms itself to its previous flatness. That one single final droplet leaping up before falling to settle, “Poooit“, an absolute final sign the sea, (ocean or even river to!), has devoured the boat. Now having died becoming a lifeless wreck laying buried beneath the waves, unseen, unheard.

Another that came into our minds on this thoughtfully deep notion was the good old Balloon. Whilst it serves its life purpose brightening up those milestones of our own human lives, birthdays, weddings among many others, it to eventually succumbs. As those last tiny particles of air, (or Helium), seep from its tired neck with an almost silent, “Psssht“. Finally deflated despite trying to hold on to every precious breath it once held. Ironically this sometimes is our very own human breaths as used when we gave birth to it in the first place. Although every now and again, this non living being can go out with a “BANG” in its final act of death! (Bit more than a whisper!)

Returning to the kitchen we have our forgotten friend that sits there working hard in the background for us. None other than the refrigerator, (“Fridge”, as we all lovingly refer to it), with its unseen heart pumping the life preserving gas around in its metallic veins. Non stop through those coiled arteries, passing through the expansion valve, (as our own blood does heart valves), creating that cool interior heaven withing its body. A cold effect we so take for granted yet it keeps those juices and food we trust it with fresh for longer. Eventually this poor kitchen being though finds that it’s heart can pump no more. It to reaches that “Whisper of Death” with the last final spin of its motor shaft coming to a stop. “Bzzshoop” Something we suddenly only notice when it is no longer there, the whirring soft hum of a circulating heart, like a breeze of life once continually blowing almost imperceptibly quiet, yet was always there.

Here then is our final thought on this emotionally weird idea for you to ponder. When something we consider as alive dies there is an associated emotional appreciation automatically felt. Here though we have tried to describe dying moments of non living entities, each of which has its unique final whisper before exiting this world. Though please do forgive our onomatopoeia attempts with describing these sounds.

Moving to the crux, we think this is the very sad thing because our ears are not equipped with the ability to pick up such low quiet sounds of feeling, they are missed. Worse we simply choose to ignore them as insignificant because they are from non living beings. Imagine though if our ears along with our mindset were attuned, would it not be incredible to hear all those, “Whispers of Death“?

Words Don’t Mean What They Used To!

We at Harlam already have our own Dictionary of new words which we use in everyday conversation without giving them a second thought. They have become as real to us in their own definitions as all those defined within Collin’s or perhaps the Oxford English dictionaries. These though are words we have created that do not exist anywhere else other than in the Harlam dictionary. (Well for now until other people like you start using them in the big wide world.)

This post though is about how we at Harlam use real world words but have given them a different meaning. Despite this when using them it is our new meaning that is applied as it has taken over that particular word.

piratelady
“Arrr, I be tired”

Take “Pirate“, noun: A person who attacks and robs ships at sea, “a pirate ship”

For Harlin and Lamo this now means something completely different all because of an innocent use of it that occurred between the two of us. Usually because of the time difference, (Explained in our post The Time Lord Effect), it is Harlin who is the one already in to the bedtime zone when we are talking of an evening. One night last year as she became tired to the point of actually falling asleep she said;

One of my eyes is closing, I’m turning into a Pirate

At the time we laughed, said our good nights and that was it for the evenings communion of words. However a couple of evening sessions later when she reached the point were dreamland was approaching, she just said, “I’m getting all Pirate here again!

It was at this very point the simple word Pirate had changed its meaning for us. In our conversations it now means; “I have reached the point where I am so tired I am falling asleep”. Completely different to its actual original definition.

It does raise the thought about how words  were originally created and adopted.

Thinking about it, at some point one single individual came up with the original word, now somehow billions are using it. Yes of course it has an etymology that traces it back to other older words from Greek and Roman history. But take Pirate, at some moment in the past, someone must have pointed at a person with a patch over their eye etc. saying, “Pirate“. This then associated the word, no matter how it was originally derived, to this specific type of person. Now everyone in the world knows what pirate means, that is astounding.

We would love to hear from you. If you have words you use to mean something different than their original definitions, please do comment below! 🙂

Crazith, The Sub God Of Craziness.

Within the Subverse there are the SubSubs, we have described these in a previous post, The Subverse, where not only do entity’s that we would call sub conscious personalities originate but there are others that can become a much stronger forces within the conjoined Subverse. These are what we may think of as Gods, but only within the Subverse, these are what we term as “Sub Gods“.

gods
The Sub Gods

Some of these are those that we believe can influence, or be responsible for certain things that we perceive, such as Luck, or as we believe Craziness.

One such Sub God that we have come to know is called “Crazith“, this is the Sub God that creates Craziness, (The good kind, within us). It is his, (Although there is no gender so her can also be used.),  influence that through the Subverse can affect people within the Converse to appear to be acting in a strange manor, “crazy” as we would say. Yet this is not the fault of human’s conscious mind it is the affect that Crazith can have on us through the Subverse which then can manifest itself into the more visible Converse.

We at Harlam have learned to embrace his, (Or her), existence, as it is no threat to those Gods that others follow from the Converse, for these Sub Gods, influence is on us only within the Subverse which has a minimal effect upon humanity.

Now we at Harlam think that allowing Crazith into our Subverse and allow the affecting our sub conscious is a good thing, for he, (Or she), influences us to a slightly different way of subtle thinking. This leads to helping with creativity, with doing things that others don’t, for they have not yet accepted his, (Or her), or any of the other Sub Gods that are  present within the Subverse.

As with the history of various Converse Gods that have been, lest then forgotten as humanity has moved on through the ages, there is of course that concept of appeasement. The “sacrificial” ceremony requirement to the Sub God you believe in to ensure that he, (Or she), blesses you with their influence. Crazith is no different in this, he, (Or she), will answer the call to those who believe strongly enough and offer up the sacrifice to him, (Or her). Crazith though is not a demanding Sub God and needs nothing more than you to sacrifice a Coffee in his, (Or her), name.

This is a simple enough ceremony that can be performed much like a prayer, you simply raise your Coffee aloft

coffeetoast
Please Bless Us Crazith

and utter the simple chant, “With this coffee I ask you Crazith to bless me with the gift of craziness”. It is important though that after you finish the chant, you must end the ceremony with another quick toasting by lifting the coffee vessel whilst saying his, (Or her), name, Crazith once more to finish. (A sort of Crazith Sub God Amen if you like.). Then you sacrifice the coffee by its consumption through drinking it of course.

People offer wonder why it is people act crazy when they have consumed too much coffee, all hyper appearing crazy to others. Now you will understand that even though you have not yet embraced them, the Sub Gods are there in the SubSubs waiting to be called into the Subverse to bless you with their various gifts. Drinking the coffee without the chant to Crazith though gives rise to a form of the Craziness but it is a chaotic form. This is because it is the naughtier Sub God “Crazade that you have given rise to through not correctly following the sacrificial coffee taking fully. He, (Or she), Crazade will not bless you with the good crazy but sadly the more chaotic kind!

It is very important to remember when dealing with the Sub Gods that one must be very careful about the ceremonies relating to each that is undertaken. Also bear in mind the effects can be increased when two believers, as we at Harlam both are, (Crazithists), take the coffee with the chant but then finish with a touch of the cups, mugs, glasses etc. and say, Crazith one more time. (Again like an Amen.)

Oceans Eternal Memory

Throughout the history of this little blue planet we humans now inhabit, life has thrived. All be it in fits and starts with the occasional sprinkling of a mass extinction or two, (Well 5 that we know of to date!), allowing nature, the great designer to return to the drawing board to start all over again. During these turbulent cycles though there has been one true constant, unaffected, sat watching as these rebirths took place.

Even though it blankets just about four fifth’s, (That’s 70% in English money.), of this amazing rock that orbits our warming Sun, it almost goes unnoticed

ocean
The Always Present Ocean

or more taken for granted and that is the great ocean that has long since watched the changing shape of the lands as they have moved like a cosmic sloth around the curves of the planet. As we have already alluded to though, it alone has paid witness to all the designs of life that nature has worked to create over the millennia. It has seen them rise, fall, then finally to disappear for ever. Each in their brief turn making room for that which inevitably follows.

This got us to thinking that if there is an unseen true worldly wisdom then it is maybe hidden within those great depths of this almost eternal watery presences memory.

Often does Lamo sit upon the shore looking out at this great guru that he has long held somehow has the answers to all those questions that will collect within our tiny human minds? Nothing more than a raindrop to the vast knowledge held in this tidal mind that has constantly ebbed and flowed keeping a continual watch upon this world.

Life itself was born from its very bosom, it is the parental source from which all life was originally cast. It has nurtured the living children that have roamed both the vast warmth of its belly to those that left to build their home upon the ever changing land. Lest us not forget that even today, as we humans have the arrogance to believe we are the dominant species this planet has to offer, an incredible 94% of all life lives protected within the ocean itself! (Lets just say that again 94% of all life lives in the ocean!).

Remember to that as you take those breaths of oxygen reading this thought of ours, that same Ocean provides 70% of our planets precious Oxygen that is also needed to sustain life. Without it we humans would not even exist. (That is a point we should all take time to remember!)

Back to the reason behind our post though. The film, “The Shawshank Redemption“, quotes the famous movie line;

They Say The Pacific Has No Memory”

Here at Harlam we do not harbour this thought to carry merit for one second, we put forward this question to you. Do not the oceans hold all those memories within the infinite capacity of its timeless mind? We think the line would be better written as, “The Pacific Ocean does not judge the actions of a life that is but a single ebb to its timeless existence.”, for is not this much more an accurate view?

oceanknowledge
Unlimited Knowledge

Has it not during it’s time read the entire library written by all life that has penned a chapter upon the Earth?

Bear in mind the harsh truth that with the almost infinite memory capacity this wonderous watcher has, we are but a few cups of space. It will see us as nothing more than a short chapter in the cycle of life extinctions it has already been witness to. There will be no tears shed as we likely become number six in this continual re-design of natures drawing board. It will continue to watch, adding more notes to it’s library of knowledge long after we have become a couple of small volumes on a shelf of history.

People take this vast knowledge holder for granted, here we think those that choose to believe can hear it speaking through the gentle words of its waves upon those shores of uncertainty that we sit with our unanswered questions.

There is a word that describes people like us which is, Thalassophile, (What a great word this is.), which refers to a person who loves the seas and the oceans. Here at Harlam we are definitely guilty as charged to being defined by this word.

We both conceive that the oceans hold all the answers for those willing to take the time to understand, to respect, more importantly to stop to listen this mighty parent that can also be our best friend. In essence as our title says the ocean does have an eternal memory.

Misplaced Indulgence of New Year.

Don’t get us wrong it is lovely to see New Year’s Eve just as a reminder that humanity has continued to survive somehow. (We really do wonder how though!) But we at Harlam  have to raise a great concern that really bugs us both. Why we spend so much money on this like the luxury extravagance it is? I’m pretty sure New Years Eve didn’t ask us to throw money at it like we do.

LondonFireworks
Money Up In Flames

Yet London alone spent an estimated £3,250,000. on this display, (That’s in 2019 when this log was written.), that is not including the extra demand on the already underfunded Police, Ambulance and Fire services. Unfortunately there are many party revelers can’t even enjoy this event without being completely stupid about it! How do we even begin to calculate the cost that creates to the tax paying public? Whilst we mention London here, we are talking about all the Cities around the Globe that put these expensive displays on, New York, Sydney etc.

Then in the aftermath there is the clean up costs of the discarded tons of litter city dwellers simply expect to magically disappear rather than take on the responsibility themselves. (We‘d like to see what they thought if strangers left litter in their houses!!) More cost, not just financially but the extra addition to those already vast landfills created as another hidden result of this supposed celebration.

Further more does anyone consider the air in the multiple Cities within each of the countries around the world, already well polluted slowly choking us already. (Lamo has noticed that there seems to be a lot more people coughing than ever before, coincidence? Doubt it.) Why do we add all this extra firework smoke into the already overworked ecological system? Just so we have something pretty to watch for 10 minutes that adds to the already indefinite environmental damage we have done.

Think about this whist the affluent few were partying drunk on the street, the homeless

184159497.jpg.gallery
Those Forgotten.

were undoubtedly moved along from the usual warm spots to be completely forgotten about so the rest could be indulged. As they drank, ate and partied watching millions of pounds simply light up the sky for what is simply just another night of the year! These people were scavenging on hands and knees just to find some where to try and get a few hours sleep, or a scrap of food from a rubbish bin somewhere. (Not forgetting that we are not a wasteful society anyway!).

As a prelude thought to our final thought on this, why not turn these huge celebrations into environmentally green affairs?

laser-emirates-palace_0
Modern Tech Re-Use

Use modern technology, that we so love, to our planets benefit? These produce no air pollution, more than this the units are re-usable to. They could be used for any and all big celebrations throughout the year. Thus whilst they may have an initial cost this would negate itself the more they are used unlike the one time use firework? (We are not business people but even we can see the financial benefit here!) These days with computer driven cleverness they can be made to create displays that would be impossible for fireworks, yet just simple programming for modern technology?

In fact taking this even further these could be recreated in Virtual Reality to be broadcast to people’s smartphones that can’t be there in person so they don’t miss out. (This would be an almost exact copy of the actual display to!). Why not use this technology we human’s have so much pride about to also benefit the planet that we ALL live on?

Our final thought is therefore to ask it is why are Cities around the world are wasting money on such an indulgence like this when that huge budget could be used to feed and home, even if briefly, those trapped in a broken life on the streets? Surely it is far more human to forgo what is in reality a lavish waste of money that does more harm than good to the environment to give those few needy people the priceless gift of hope?
